Canadian
Jewellers for Conflict-free Diamonds
Canadian Jewellers for Conflict-free Diamonds is
an initiative of One Sky, in collaboration with Amnesty
International Canada and Partnership
Africa Canada. The initiative gives retailers of diamonds
the opportunity to help end the trade in conflict diamonds.
We believe that there are many Canadian retailers who are
committed to ethics and corporate social responsibility. We
are inviting jewellers to demonstrate those ethics by joining
the initiative. In doing so, the jewellery industry will be
working to create a credible system that lets retailers assure
Canadian consumers that the diamonds they're buying are conflict-free.
One
Sky's commitment to members of Canadian Jewellers for Conflict-free
Diamonds
Upon joining the initiative, One Sky will provide
jewellers with resources to take action (for example, a sample
letter to send to the WDC). One Sky will also list
jewellers who have joined the initiative on our website,
give updates on further actions jewellers can take as events
develop, and issue a sticker that retailers can display to
show their membership.
Are
you advocating a boycott of diamonds?
No, we are not calling for a boycott. The diamond industry
is important to economies in Canada and Africa. It's not our
intention to harm the industry. But the fact is that even
with the Kimberley Process, blood diamonds can still be passed
off as legitimate diamonds. The jewellery industry has agreed
that the sale of conflict diamonds has to stop. But the only
way this can happen is for a system of regular, independent
monitoring to be put in place. All sectors of society need
to pressure the diamond industry and the Canadian government
to help make this happen. We believe that the jewellery industry
has a special interest and a special responsibility for joining
this call.
